She smiled when she felt the pressure from his hand on hers. She was glad he wasn't upset at her. She nodded to his words. "I agree." She leaned in, resting her head on his chest for a moment as they walked. She pulled his hand up to her lips and kissed the inside of his palm. "I love you." She said as she smiled up at him.

Sigurd smiled and pulled her hand his lips as well, kissing it softly "and I you." he said with a doting grin. as they walked Sigurd reached into one of his pouches and pulled a stick of dried meat from it, he popped it into his mouth and chewed thoughtfully, Elves certainly knew how to dry and cure meat... the salt and spice and overall tenderness of the meat was a delight, not too soft that it would melt in his mouth but also not too firm that it'd take him hours to chew. It was like a taste of home. Had he been in his hybrid or wolf form he knew his tail would be wagging like mad.

Ashwyn smiled fondly at him as he kissed her hand. They continued down the path, and though it was slightly eerie, she couldn't stop smiling.

They all walked in relative silence, Lo pointing out various plants to Zane, him guessing what they were and how they were used, Ash and Sig glowing and walking hand in hand. As they walked the normal sounds of a forest began to diminish. The sounds of birds began to lessen. The buzzing of various pests seemed to vanish. And though the light level had never changed, suddenly there was utter silence around them.

Ashwyn hadn't noticed it at first, so lost in her afterglow, but after a while it started to seem odd that the wildlife hadn't made any sounds. She first noticed something wrong when she felt Pip tug at her leg. She paused in her step to look down at the fox pup. He was pulling at her and whimpering softly. She frowned and reached down to pick him up.

"What's wrong, Pip?" She asked him as he buried himself under her arm. She looked up at Sigurd with concern. "Something is wrong."

Zane had slowed when Ashwyn did, to avoid bumping into her. He began looking around with a frown. "Is it just me or... has it become rather... still?"

Subconsciously lowering the volume of her voice, Lo doesn't really notice the eerie silence until Pip starts whimpering. Looking up when everyone else stops, she listens for the familiar songs of the birds from home...or the new songs of the unfamiliar birds in this forest...nothing. Looking around nervously, Lopiena starts seeking out whatever is causing the silence...normally something like this would indicate a sudden thunderstorm...or a predator...

Sigurd noticed the sounds of nature around them slowly dying off but he didn't really feel cause for concern... until they stopped entirely. Wanting to test out his bonding technique, he reached his arm out the she side. His greatsword seemed to look as though it was being torn apart from reality on his back and re-materializing in his hand. Readying himself he kept his eyes darting around their position trying to catch any kind of movement in the brush or distance.

For funzies <perception roll> 18 (passive is 17 anyway lol)

The forest appeared just as it had a moment ago. The lighting hadn't changed. The trees hadn't changed. It was simply.... silent.

Ashwyn frowned and her voice lowered without her realizing it. "Something's here...." She said softly.

Zane was looking all around them, trying to spot something but nothing seemed unusual except for the sound. "I've heard of spells like this. Spells that suck the sound out of an area.."

"So... you think someone has done this deliberately?" Ash asked.

"Could be..." he replied.

A shimmering shape appeared before them, about 20 feet ahead and just off the path. Still no sound, but the area between two trees appeared to....wave. Like the surface of a pond.

Nervously watching the shimmering area between the trees, Lo slowly readies her staff, silver side pointed forward. "Well whatever it is, it had better do something." Taking a hesitant step forward, she takes a closer look at the strange phenomenon. "Hello? We mean no harm, unless you do."

Sigurd growled and tightened his grip on his sword, his eyes locked on the ripple "this could be part of the shimmer but... Be careful it could be some creature too." Walking forward he approached the ripple to get a better look at it and if there was anything beyond

The shimmering appeared harmless enough, but the silence around them made it much more frightening than it might have been.

Ashwyn walked cautiously up to the shimmering area but... it was just... shimmer. She could see through it, but it was like looking through water. She reached up and touched it and a ripple appeared where her finger had been.

"Strange..." She muttered. She glanced back at the others. "What do you think?"

Zane approached and looked at it. He walked all the way around frowned, looking carefully at the shimmering spot. "I've never seen anything like this.... it's similar to some portals I've seen but.... it's more.... subtle."

"A portal... so you think it's a gateway of some kind?"

Zane shrugged. "It could be." He looked around and picked up a pebble and tossed it through. It vanished as soon as it hit the shimmer. "Hmmm..." he leaned in, looking at the spot. Suddenly the pebble came flying out and hit him in the forehead. He gasped and fell backwards.

Sigurd laughed to himself as the Gnome went falling backwards "well it doesn't seem to like rocks." he said bluntly.

<oh god.. 20 for a str check, you're gonna hate me>

Walking over to Zane he patted the gnome on the back "I have a more scientific way to test this." without waiting for a response Sigurd grabbed him by the back of his shirt and trousers and heaved him into the rippling portal/shimmer thing.

Watching the shimmer nervously, Lopiena isn't quite sure what to make of it.  As Zane circles the area, she slowly lowers her staff and simply tries to figure out what it is. At Zane's experiment, she watches silently when the pebble disappears, but when it comes shooting back she squeaks in surprise. Loooking at it closer, she wonders what kind of magic it is...

When Sigurd throws Zane into the portal, Lo gapes in shock. "Zane!!! You...I...but...."  Looking from Sigurd to the portal and back again, Lo isn't sure whether to laugh, shout, or run after the gnome. Finally she settles on just waiting to see if he'll pop back out like the pebble did. "Well that's one way to do it, but...uhm...Sigurd? Well. ..I guess...never mind..."

Leaning on her staff, she silently starts counting. "If he's not back in 10 seconds I'm going after him."

Ashwyn was watching the portal intently when Zane tossed the pebble in. When it came back at him and knocked him over she couldn't help but smirk. At Sigurd's words she rolled her eyes but chuckled just the same. "No, it really doesn't."

However, when he picked the gnome up and threw him in her eyes widened. "Sigurd!" She gasped at him and then just stared at the shimmering spot where Zane disappeared. She reached over and slapped Sigurd's arm. "What was that?!" She shouted at him. "We have no idea what that thing is! What if it's dangerous?!"

As if on cue, the shimmer rippled again, just as it had before the pebble came through. Ashwyn stepped back, waiting for Zane to fly back out. Instead, a gnome skeleton flew out of the portal and landed in a heap at their feet.

Ashwyn's hand covered her mouth and her eyes were wide as she stared at the bare bones...

"ZANE!!!! NO!!!!" Lopiena screams. Just when she'd started to like the little guy...No, there must be some mistake! He can't be gone! she doesn't blame Sigurd, there’s no way he could have known. Sobbing, she kneels next to the pile of bones. There’s no way she can run in after him now.

And yet...there's something weird about this whole thing. Even if this...whatever it is eats flesh, Zane was wearing a pack. What happened to the rest of his stuff? Mind reeling, Lo starts thinking about what he had. His books...no, that's leather and paper, natural materials that may have been eaten. His staff...clothes...also natural. But something should have come back out...his gold coin, if nothing else....

More and more, Lo convinces herself that this can't be Zane, someone just threw this skeleton back at them to scare them. Standing, she seriously considers going in after him anyway, in spite of the obvious dangers...but she's not that dumb, there must be some way to solve this mystery without dying. Hesitantly, she pokes at the portal with the silver end of her staff.

Sigurd watched the skeleton be thrown from the shimmer and examined it, for a moment he felt a wave of heat roll down his back but then he looked at the ripples and growled "rediculous" shifting into his hybrid form he stormed into the ripples himself.

Ashwyn's eyes widened even more when Sigurd stepped through the portal. "Sigurd!" She reached out to grab him but it was too late. She just stood staring at the spot that he disappeared for a moment. She waited with bated breath but...nothing fell out of the shimmer this time. She glanced from the skeleton to the shimmer and back again for a moment.

"Gah, idiot." She mumbled before stepping through the shimmer herself.

When Sigurd shifts and walks into the shimmer, Lopiena immediately jumps back in shock and looks at Ashwyn. In the brief few seconds before anything else happens, she grabs her hand. "No matter what happens...I'm coming with you."

When nothing else seems to happen, Lo watches Ashwyn's every movement and steps into the shimmer matching step for step.

Passing through the shimmer was like stepping into jelly. It felt thick on their bodies and was difficult to move through, but at the same time they're bodies seemed to walk normally. It was a strange sensation. It seemed that time slowed down and only a few steps took much longer.

Finally the world seemed to clear and the forest came back into view. But it was different. This forest was twice as thick as the one they had just been inside but it was also twice as bright. It was unclear where the light was coming from but it was just as bright as if the sun itself was shining down on them. Yet, when they looked up, it was nothing but canopy. Ahead of them was a vast grove of trees that were dotted by strange little dwellings. They were brightly colored and seemed to resemble large flowers or twisted ivy or, in some cases, old teapots or boots. Around those dwellings were small humanoids. Some had wings and others seemed almost like elves...except they all stood between one and three inches high.

Zane was sitting in the middle of the grove, staring at the creatures as they flittered around him and he seemed to be talking to one that sat on his shoulder. When Sigurd walked through the portal there was a distinct sound of giggling. Several of the creatures were flying around the portal and others rode on small animals like rats, mice, rabbits and other rodents.

When Ashwyn stepped through, holding on to Lopiena, she gasped. "Fairies!" She looked around wide eyed. "Amazing..."

They were twittering and laughing until Zane looked up and noticed them. "Oh! You made it!" He smiled and stood up, walking over to them. "Can you believe this?!?" He asked, holding his hands out at either side. "This is Shimmer Hollow. And this," he indicated the fairy sitting on his shoulder. "Is Brock Applefleck." The male fairy bowed his head in greeting. When he spoke, his voice sounded a normal volume despite his small size.

"Greetings friends! I would like to personally apologize for the games played on you today." He glared at the twittering fairies near the portal who laughed once more and flew off. "The young enjoy teasing travelers."

Zane nodded excitedly. "Did you see that skeleton? Biologically accurate! It was quite a construction. And so quickly!" He was a little too excited.

Sigurd shifted back, his face read as less than amused his back stiffened as lowered his head level with Zane "ARE YOU MAD!?" He thumped the gnome on the head lightly, knowing it wasn't his fault but if he were to strike one of these tiny fairies he'd likely crush them. "Lopiena was beside herself when they threw that poor excuse for a carcass back out the portal! If it didn't smell funny I would have thought I had accidently thrown all out supplies into oblivion and your foolish ass with it!" He took ansecond to catch his breath then looked at Brock "and you..." His eyes darkened "while I appreciate humor as much as the next being, we are on a very important mission into unfamiliar territory to try to save this forest and all who dwell within it. Including you. So if your youth have any more pranks, jokes or guffaws up their tiny sleeves I kindly suggest you tell them to stay their intentions for self humor until we are days apart from your home" he said in a low monotone almost warning. "With respect" he added.

Looking around at the  change in the forest with wide eyes, Lopiena at first is more intrigued by the lighting and the trees...but seeing Zane is such a relief, and surrounded by fairies! Dozens of them, in such bright colors and sizes and...

Trying not to stare and get her breathing under control, Lo focuses on Zane more to keep from getting overwhelmed than anything else. At the introduction of Brock Applefleck, she bows instinctively, but isn't quite sure whether to hug Zane or slap him. Well she can't do either while a fairy is sitting on his shoulder. So he's safe...for now...well not from Sigurd!

Nodding along with the lecture, Lo waits until he's done while considering options. Zane has proven that he's uncomfortable with crying and she's definitely more than worked up enough that waterworks are already nearly there, but there are just too many eyes and Lo has very little experience with intentionally using womanly wiles on anyone. Instead, she kneels in the grass and simply expresses herself.

"Zane, I was so worried...I thought I'd never see you again, and for a moment that's all that mattered. I...don't want to lose you. I think of you as a friend, and my friends are more valuable to me than anything."

Zane cringed and then rubbed his head after Sigurd wacked him. "Heeeey.... I didn't do it!" He complained.

When he spoke to Brock, the small fairy smirked. He didn't seem at all threatened or worried about Sigurd in the least, and that bothered Ashwyn.

"I have already apologized for their actions, Lord Krieger, and I do mean it. But understand one thing..." Though he didn't change physically, his voice seemed to grow and a strange power made him seem twice Sigurd's size. "This is our forest. We make the threats here."

Ashwyn reached up and touched Sigurd's arm, pulling him back slightly. "I trust this means you are responsible for this thing called The Shimmer?"

Brock seemed to return to his normal self as he turned to Ashwyn with a smile. "Indeed. That is what the elves call us. I must admit, I've come to like the name. We even named our city after it."

As Lopiena's words, Zane frowned and sat next to her. "I'm sorry. I had no real part in it. I just...I got distracted. Everything is so amazing! I didn't even know they were throwing the skeleton back until they'd already done it. And then Brock arrived and... I am deeply sorry for worrying you."

Backing away at Brock's seemingly powerful spell...and nearly falling backwards in the process, since she’s still kneeling...Lo simply nods at Zane's apology. "It's ok Zane, it wasn't your fault. And you're right, this place is amazing...and the skeleton was absolutely correct." Winking, Lo stands and addresses Brock directly. "Thank you for allowing us into your home. Ahh...Kingdom. City. Um..." Suddenly extremely embarrassed, Lo backs up and stands next to Sigurd and Ashwyn. Muttering very softly under her breath just for their ears, she almost whimpers. "Help."

Sigurd noted Brock's change, he was about to make a rebuttal but Ashwyn's touch stopped him. The conversation about threats was over. For now.

Clipping his sword to his back he calms himself, thinking for even the briefest moment that he had killed Zane stressed him out, he felt terrible. If Sigurd was going to kill Zane it would be in combat, face to face. Also, the thought of losing a companion wasn't something that he could deal with right now. Aaaaand the gnome was starting to grow on him.

As Lopiena stumbles over herself and her words Sigurd put his hands on her shoulders holding her steady. "Relax.." he said softly.

Brock chuckled at Lopiena's nerves. "There's no reason ti be nervous. We have no reason to harm you. Not yet anyway." he chuckled. "Come. The Queen wants to speak to you."

Ashwyn looked at him. "Queen?"

Zane stood again and turned to them. "Yes, it seems the fairies have a rather hive-like society. They are servants of the Fairy Queen who births them all. Brock is her mate." he explained excitedly.

Ashwyn turned back to Brock. "Wouldn't that make you the King?"

Brock chuckled. "Not exactly. I serve my love the same as any other fairy. It is my honor that she chooses me to mate with."

Brock turned and began to hovor slowly forward, obviously moving slowly for their sake. "It is the Queen who allowed you entrance into this forest in the first place. And believe me when I say that it is rare that she allows anyone into our city. You should be honored."

Trembling slightly at Sigurd's touch, Lopiena simply focuses on her breathing.  There's no way she can control her heart rate, unfortunately...and now that she's aware that he can actually hear it she can't stop the deepening blush from racing across her features...still though.  He's definitely well spoken around political figures, and although their introduction had been a bit rocky (pun intended, Lo smirks a little remembering the pebble hitting Zane what seems like a lifetime ago) she feels much more confident knowing that they're all together.  Slowly relaxing the tension in her muscles, she finally nods.  Reaching up and giving one of his hands a little squeeze, she smiles at Ashwyn since Sigurd is behind her.  "Thank you."

Listening quietly to the conversation as they start moving forward, Lo can't help but wonder what the Queen Fairy looks like.  Between the discussion of the hive mentality and the fact that she'd birthed all of the fairies, the mental image of a queen bee just won't go away...or maybe a queen ant with the long graceful wings.  Well whatever wonders they will see, it's more than relieving that they're hopefully heading toward some answers.  At Brock's description, she bows slightly while carefully keeping her expression fairly pleasant but neutral.  Still fighting rampant emotions trying to claw to the surface of her mind, Lo tries again to say something without messing it up this time.  "We are honored. Thank you for receiving us all together in your city."

All together...Lo suddenly looks around.  "Where is Pip?"

Ashwyn glanced back at Lo's question. "Hm? Oh, he's here." She looked down but Pip wasn't next to her. Instead, he was growling at the little rodents holding faries. "Oh dear." She quickly moved forward and lifted the fox pup into her arms. "Pip hush." She whispered harshly at him.

Brock laughed. "It's nothing to worry about, really. We've dealt with young animals. He wouldn't be able to harm anyone."

Ashwyn smiled a bit shyly. "I'll hold on to him." She nodded, letting the pup nuzzle against her.
